The Story

In a world of eternal darkness one man finds himself hunted by a mysterious figure. In his search for answers he comes to find that the world he lives in may only be a fabricated dream. With the help of a stranger who he may not be able to trust, he must decide what is real or not.

The Origins

The original idea for Shades of Darkness began back in 2004 in my senior year of high school when me and a friend became obsessed with the idea of dreams and wanted to make a film about dreams. Thus, Shades of Darkness was born and the idea of creatures known as Planeshifters who's only weakness was the moon came into existance.

Years later once I came to Hawaii I decided after numerous short films it was time to take the leap and make my first feature. The inspiration for this step; Robert Rodriguez. Knowing what he had done before digital technology I knew I could do more with less with digital technology. This led to being able to fund almost nothing. I could pay for casting sessions, equipment, and some props. Nothing more.

I was fortunate to assemble to talented cast and crew who were willing to work on Shades of Darkness pro bono because they had faith in the script and me as a Director. Many of these people who were brought on board were met through my early acting adventures on Oahu as well as through the cast.

It was shot over a course of six months entirely on a Canon XL2 with one lens on the island of Oahu, HI, while working full time on active duty in the U.S. Army.
